Reception to follow presentation

Join Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame songwriter and author Layng Martine Jr. and his Grammy-nominated son, producer, engineer, and musician Tucker Martine, at the United Theatre on Thursday, July 26 at 6:00 pm for an intimate look into the process of writing songs and producing records for a living. The night is inspired by the release of Layng Martine Jr.'s new album “MUSIC MAN,” which Tucker produced and which began as a father / son project between Layng and Tucker, “strictly for the family.” Then, a few years after the album's creation Tucker played it for a friend, the head of a storied small record company, who said “Hey, I LOVE that! I want to put it out!”

On July 26 Layng and Tucker will be at the United Theatre to play a bit of the album, talk about the fun of working with each other, and give a sense of what a day is like in their very different music business roles: songwriter and record producer. Layng will talk about how a song can evolve from a songwriter’s musings and strummings at the kitchen table to a song heard all over the world by a famous artist. Tucker will talk about choosing artists to work with, choosing what songs to record for an album, how he envisions what the finished recording of a given song should sound like, the high interpersonal drama that often comes with recording a band, and many other hidden subtleties of his job.

LAYNG MARTINE, JR. is an American songwriter whose compositions have appeared on the country and pop music charts for over 4 decades. Layng authored an article for the New York Times' “Modern Love” column about his continued love story with his wife Linda after she became paraplegic in an automobile accident. Layng's story became one of the most shared "Modern Love" columns ever. The enormous response he received to this piece was the inspiration for his 2019 memoir, “PERMISSION TO FLY.

TUCKER MARTINE is an American record producer, musician, composer and engineer who has produced #1 and top 10 pop albums and worked with artists like The Decemberists, My Morning Jacket, R.E.M, Modest Mouse, k.d. Lang, Neko Case, Bill Frisell, Sufjan Stevens, and Mavis Staples, as well as writing and performing his own music.
